FACT: “The top 9 executives in Apple earn more than the combined wages
of 95 000 employees that male Apple products”
The question posed to me here is would I, if I were
fortunate enough to be one of the 9 executives, boldly take this salary? And
the answer is a resounding YES! I would definitely, and with no shame, take the
salary because I am entitled to it having done the work as per the deliverables
and the terms and conditions of my performance and employment contract. This
would then enable me to afford, live and maintain a lifestyle that I work hard
for – getting rich in the process would be a bonus and that’s my ultimate goal!
We are all parties (some active and some not) in the hustle
and bustle of our world’s economy and we work, if not hoping and dreaming, to
afford a comfortable and decent lifestyle so, if presented with an opportunity
to earn that much for a year’s work by fulfilling a set of preconditions attached
to it, I believe (unequivocally so) we would all go for it and earn what’s due
to us.
We live in a world where you cannot make everyone happy and we
are all at different levels in the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs that motivates
us, for these exact reasons we rely on universal law to guide the legality and
legitimacy of our actions in attempting to satisfy our needs from basic to self
actualization. On the same basis, one has to note that this “remuneration”,
substantial as it is, and the decision to award it are contractually bound and
enforced – this alone establishes and involves a legal agreement that
facilitates mutual benefit for the concerned parties.
Law is on my side as far as this matter is concerned and the
sum can be legitimately defended with logic and justification. To deny me
what’s due to me would be selfish and I, relying on my virtues, would have been
exploited and denied the same protection and security provided by generic norms
and values that we all strive for and practice. I refuse to be held at ransom
because of a virtue or virtues that some people subscribe to but would not
think twice about the same if conditions favoured them.
Also, there’s tactical and strategic skills, overall strategy,
short to long term objectives, stakeholder engagement and involvement, share
price and shareholder’s dividends attached to earning that much. There is no
comparison of the job descriptions, the workload and activities in all levels
within an organization. If you put in the work as part and leader of the top
brass, overseeing and responsible for the entire company – more importantly the
long term goals that would help secure and to an extent, guarantee the jobs of
lower-level management and their subordinates or front line staff you must get
rewarded for it.
Remember that doing the “right thing” is largely influenced
by virtues, norms and values and carry different weight and/or importance from
person to person – the best we can do for others is hope that the morals and
ethics they subscribe to would guide their choices and decisions for greater
good of the world an those who live in it.
